The predawn fire completely destroyed the wooden inn, which began business in 1868 in the center of the Shuzenji spa district studded with Japanese-style inns, and injured nine people.

This is the original L-shaped Fujiya (wisteria) Hotel, opened in 1878. Sennosuke Yamaguchi purchased an inn of long standing, Fujiya Ryokan, with the help of his foster father. He renamed Fujiya (the same pronunciation, but different kanji characters for Mt. Fuji ). It was the first Western-style hotel in Japan. The hotel was built by workers from Yokohama. The townscape of Shimosuwa-juku(post town) on the Nakasendo. Tea houses line on both sides of the road and you can see the man at the foot of high ladder, hanging the fire bell in the center. In the back, you can see the Shaso(Shrine forest) of Suwa Taisha Shimosha Akimiya.
